When it comes to fitness, most people start with setting goals, creating a workout routine, and committing to a healthy lifestyle. But as time goes on it can be hard to find motivation, and it’s easy to fall off track. This is where a fitness community comes in.
A workout partner can take your fitness journey to the next level. From accountability to camaraderie, being involved in a fitness community can be one of the best decisions for your health and fitness.
Echelon instructors Sarah and Karen are supporting each other on their own 28-day Healthy Habits challenges throughout February. They told us about some of the benefits of a workout community and having a workout partner.
Karen:Community is paramount to exercise adherence. Humans are social creatures, and exercise and training, as we all know, can be challenging! Having others around you provide support and accountability, plus the enjoyment of spending time with like-minded individuals, means you are more likely to stick to your fitness routine. During Echelon's Healthy Habits challenge, having Sarah's support and guidance made the difference between me working to achieve my goal or giving up!
Sarah: I’m passionate about cycling and yoga, so I just love sharing this with others. One of the biggest hurdles to maintaining a consistent workout routine is simply showing up. Having a workout partner adds a level of accountability. When you know someone is relying on you to show up to help them, it becomes a lot harder to skip a session.
Karen:We have such busy lifestyles nowadays, which can make finding time in your day to exercise and/or socialise difficult. With research showing that loneliness can be linked to many serious health problems, it could be argued that fitting in time to connect with others is as important as finding time for movement.
There is research proving a link between strong social relationships/regular exercise and a lack of mental decline as we age, as shown in the Journal of Biomedical Science. Combining exercise with community is time-efficient and a fun way to improve and maintain both your physical and mental health. As adults, it can be difficult to make friends, and I have found joining exercise classes a great way to meet people who share my interests!
Sarah:For me, helping my peers in the industry is such a joy! It can be a pretty lonely job at times, and seeing Karen’s progression is so wonderful and reminds me why I love my job. It is a good time to socialise, catch up on each other’s lives, and bond over our mutual fitness goals. It’s important to look after your mental wellbeing as well as your physical fitness.
Karen:Training as a community unlocks a bank of knowledge from others, and the opportunity to grow and learn. I would have never attempted a headstand if it were not for Sarah's knowledge, and her guidance gave me the confidence to try new things and build new skills in the future. It is a two-way process, and the ability to share your own knowledge and skills with others as you progress, is very rewarding.
Sarah:Learning from each other and what we’re good at is such a lovely exchange and for me is a huge part of my practice “off the mat” as a yoga teacher. I’ve been doing a one to one workshop with Karen. For me this helped me understand where Karen needed help. Everyone approaches inversions differently, so as a coach it was about finding Karen’s sticking points and also how she learns best. Using that helped to come up with suggestions of manageable and realistic ways she could improve her headstand and put it into practice. Since then we have been sending videos so I can continue to offer pointers.
Being part of a fitness community isn’t just about having people to talk to while you train; it’s about support, shared knowledge, mental wellbeing, and shared progress. Whether you're looking to stay motivated, improve your performance, or simply enjoy the social aspect of fitness, a fitness community helps in all aspects.
An Echelon Premier membership allows you to race up the Leaderboard with live and on-demand workout classes, plus our 24/7 social media community means you can connect with new friends and share your achievements.
